Dancers: The unseen reality of professional Dance [2022]

Dancers: The Unseen Reality of Professional Dance is a photodocumentary project developed in 2022 that explores the professional contemporary dance lifestyle beyond the stage. While dance is most often experienced through performance, this project focuses on the less visible realities that shape a dancer’s career and everyday life.

Following an interview process with dancers from different parts of the world, the work investigates aspects of the profession that frequently remain unnoticed: the building of personal and artistic relationships, the challenge of maintaining life stability within an unpredictable career, the importance of family and community support, and the constant negotiation between mental and physical wellbeing.

Created in collaboration with actress and choreographer Uliana Kuzmina, the project documents a specific moment within the creative process of contemporary dance. The photographic narrative follows the artist trio Noemi Piva, Sarah Chinetti, and Federica Siani during the development of Considero Casa, a choreographic work that would later receive the award PERMUTAZIONI XI EDIZIONE.

Through this process, the project also brings into focus the wider artistic network surrounding the creation, including Rosella Amatori, Uliana Kuzmina, and Andreas Alexandrou. Rather than presenting dancers only through the spectacle of performance, the series explores the quieter and often unseen dimensions of the profession: rehearsal spaces, moments of vulnerability, collaboration, fatigue, and resilience.

By shifting attention away from the stage and toward the lived experience of the artists, Dancers invites viewers to reconsider what it truly means to pursue a life in contemporary dance.
